Xinzhuang Small-Scale Living

As Xinzhuang evolves into a dense urban hub, our approach to this compact new apartment was centered on "Future-Proofing." Recognizing that in small-scale units (小坪數), flexibility is the ultimate luxury, we prioritized a design where the value lies in both the architecture and the curated objects within it.

Amidst this modern flexibility, we integrated a singular, powerful focal point: a bespoke dining island crafted from irregular reclaimed wood. This "living" piece of furniture provides a rugged, organic contrast to the apartment’s sleek, light-filled interior. By keeping the background intentionally minimal, the natural textures of the aged wood are amplified, creating a "visual anchor" that grounds the home.

The Initial Vision

In place of traditional linear furniture, we envisioned a large, sculptural round sofa as the living room’s centerpiece. This circular form serves a dual purpose: it disrupts the rigid parallel lines of the walls and creates a 360-degree social 'island' that encourages conversation. To further prioritize the family’s long-term needs, we suggested foregoing the central island in favor of a full-height, integrated storage wall at one end of the residence. This choice maximizes functional density while keeping the floor plan clear. In lieu of a heavy island, two slender, bar-height tables provide flexible zones for dining and work—maintaining an airy, unobstructed path through the heart of the home."
